Ulm´s New Centre (Ulms Neue Mitte)
On the one side, there is the historical Ulm Minster, the venerable Town Hall and the old market place and in contrast to these the modern buildings of the “Neue Strasse”, the white Town House and the glass pyramid housing the library: Ulm has re-designed its centre and set new trends!
Reducing the four-lane road through the city to just two lanes provided a unique opportunity to create something new in the centre of the town. Using the motto “medieval meets modern”, an ensemble has developed, that has been highly appraised, not only by architects and builders.
An ensemble of architecturally unique buildings was placed among the historical buildings and sites, completely intentionally: in 1993, the brilliant white Town House designed by the American architect Richard Maier was placed opposite the imposing Ulm Minster, with the highest church spire in the world. In 2004, building began on the glass pyramid central library designed by Gottfried Böhm, which presents a contrast to the Ulm Town Hall and the Market Place. On the other side of the Town Hall, the commercial building called “Münstertor” and the Sparkasse building with glass and concrete façades completed this part of the development. Both buildings were designed by Stephan Braunfels and received an award during the German Town Prize Award Ceremony of 2006. The Weishaupt Art Gallery by Wolfram Wöhr was finished in November 2007 and completed the development of the New Centre
